How a hotel gets its score
Three things make the score. A fourth is kept apart from it. The full method.
- How it compares: half the scoreNearly every hotel is rated 8 or 9 out of 10, so a rating alone says little. We work out how many hotels in the same city it beats.
- What guests said: 30%We read a hotel's most recent reviews from the last two years and count praise and complaints, subject by subject. Each count opens to a guest's own words.
- What guests photographed: 20%The newest guest photos are checked for damage and dirt, and against what the hotel advertises.
- Serious reports sit beside the scoreIllness, bed bugs, theft, harassment and hazards that guests blame on the hotel are never averaged away. They are shown next to the score, not folded into it.
